Richard Castle este un scriitor de romane politiste, si care prin urmare se bucura de un foarte mare succes. Insa in prezent sufera de lipsa de inspiratie dupa ce isi omoara pesonajul principal in ultimul roman publicat, si se vede nevoit sa gasesca un inlocuitor. Richard este plictisit pana peste cap de faima, fani si femei, cand este abordat de catre detectivul Kate Beckett de la politia din New York, pentru ca a aparut un criminal copiator, care se inspira din romanele lui Castle. Astfel el ajuta la prinderea criminalului si prin urmare gaseste in persoana lui Kate pe urmatorul sau personaj, asa ca se decide sa o foloseasca drept sursa de inspiratie pentru urmatorul sau roman. Folosindu-se de cunostintele pe care le are primeste permisiunea sa o insoteasca pe Beckett in timp ce aceasta investigheaza diferite cazuri. Castle este un investgator mai putin traditional si felul cum abordeaza crimele creeza de fiecare data noi conflicte intre el si Beckett care trateaza cazurile intr-un fel conservator.
